I'd further, rather dangerously I'm sure, assume that it's probably where a lot of these phrases started. Then the American tendency to <ahem> over-exaggerate absolutely everything led to certain redundant phrases becoming common usage. No longer content to have a nice day, now we must all have a great day. Good thing we've got so much amazing food and so many epic moments in our days to help with that.
